A local consumer received a text message that stated, “You have been chosen to receive a $100.00 cash rebate card to find out more call 800-454-3944 text stop to stop.”

BBB Staff called the number from the message and it is answered by someone claiming to be located in Las Vegas, going by the name New Line Awards. They state that you have won a $100.00 retail rebate certificate as part of their consumer stimulus plan and they want to mail it to you. She said they have numerous partnerships with retailers like Target and Wal-Mart, so you have done business with one of their partners and that is what made you eligible to win their prize. In order to get the rebate mailed you have to give your name and address along with a credit card number and pay $4.95 shipping and handling.

Your BBB is warning you not to fall for these scammers. In many instances, that $4.95 fee to cover shipping and handling can end up being several hundred dollars with nothing to show for it. The best case scenario is that you will be signed up for a monthly service that will be nearly impossible to cancel. The worst case scenario is getting hundreds, if not thousands of dollars racked up on your credit card or your bank account cleared out. Either way, this is not the kind of deal you are looking for.
